lovely people, lovely life

Hello family and friends!

Well, this has been a really wonderful week. Super crazy and tiring, but awesome!

Last Monday was fun because we had FHE at the Darting's house. They are this cute little family from California that is here on military assignment. They've been here for about 2 years or so. They have three cute little kids. It was so nice to just be in an American home! We had a delicious dinner and then Sis. Darting and the kids led a FHE lesson that was so good. Then we all ate cheesecake in honor of B. Darting's upcoming birthday. Amazing Monday!

I just want to tell you about some of our investigators and then tell you about MLC in BKK!

So, we have a handful of awesome investigators right now. The first is Sister D. She is the sister-in-law of a recent convert of ours. Sister D is Christian already and her husband is Buddhist. They live in BKK, but she's pregnant right now so she came up to Chiang Mai for her pregnancy to be in the clean air. Anyway, her sister-in-law is quite the little missionary and now Sister D wants to be baptized. She loves what we've taught so far and was at church yesterday. She is not legally married, so we'll have to take care of that first. In Thailand I've met a lot of people that are married according to tradition, but never get around to actually signing marriage papers. It's pretty common. So, hopefully she can get the marriage papers signed soon! She is so cute and I just love the amazing support and encouragement she has from her sister.

Another investigator that I love that is just so cute is Brother Md. He's an 80 year old man that we invited off the street. He has come to church twice and we've taught him once. He's pretty set in his Buddhist ways, yet he loves coming to the church. We'll see what happens this next week with him! He's just the cutest man!

We have a mother and daughter that are investigating right now, as well. These two were not satisfied with Buddhism and wanted to find something more. When we taught the restoration lesson along with some of the commandments, they absolutely loved it! They understand that commandments are important and that we actually need to follow them if we want to see the benefits in our lives and receive blessings from God. Anyway, they love church so much. They have not accepted a baptismal date yet, but we'll be meeting with them again soon and I think it should not be much longer. They are just so with it and they support each other so well and love this Gospel!

On our way back from Bangkok a Philippino man was on the same bus as we were. We got talking to him and it turns out he had a lot of Mormon friends back home. Right now he's here for a year working. He asked us what the difference was between the big white churches and the churches with basketball courts. haha Anyway, he said he had a friend that all of a sudden went missing for a couple of years and then randomly was back at home. He asked this friend where on earth he had disappeared to and the friend told him he had been serving a mission in another country. Anyway, he's been well-exposed to Mormonism and he agreed to come to church yesterday. It was a really good experience. He just had a huge smile all day long and made friends with some other members in our branch from the Philippines. We'll be meeting with him again soon and begin teaching him lessons. Oh, this made me laugh. In Sacrament meeting the opening hymn was "The Morning Breaks." It's kind of a tricky song. I was sitting next to him and he said, "If this was a test, I would fail." haha Love this guy!

Anyway, those are a few of our investigators right now! I'll keep you updated. Sister Bee is doing SO well! She loves loves loves church and she is so involved and just loving all the members. It makes me so happy! Yesterday she was confirmed a member of the church! Happy day!

Also, yesterday was miraculous because we had 9 investigators at church! Two of them are from China and we are teaching them tonight! There are so many people to talk about but just not enough time.

Oh, yesterday as I was waiting in the lobby for our investigators to show up to church I saw a farang couple walking up to the door. When they came in I almost died because I realized that it was Alicia and her husband! I visit taught Alicia my freshman year- we were in the same dorm! I was so beyond excited to see her! She and her husband have been living in China for a year and came to Thailand for a weekend vacation. They are so cute and it was so nice to talk to her for a few minutes. Made my day!

Also, last night was our last dinner with the Ures. So sad, they are being transferred to BKK to take the place of another senior couple that is going home. We are going to miss them SO much! I love the Ures to death!

Okay, so MLC in BKK was so great! We left Friday evening and got there early Saturday morning and crashed at the church. Unfortunately, I accidentally left my nice clothes on the bus, so I was in my bus sleeping clothes for the whole day... not as professional or as put together as I was hoping for. Oh well! haha Anyway, Elder Allen is the head of the missionary department. He headed up "The District" videos and many, many other things. Elder Funke of the 70 was also there. They are so amazing, I learned so much. I can't even tell you everything, but I'll highlight some of the main points that I liked.

Okay, first of all we had MLC in the morning, but then later in the afternoon we had a meeting for all the BKK missionaries and people down for MLC. Well, Elder Allen is really straight forward and does not sugar coat anything. He congratulated us for doing so well with finding and baptizing people but then he chastised us for forgetting a lot of other really important things. He quoted President Hinckley a lot. President Hinckley taught that there is a much better way to work than just tracting/contacting/etc... it's through the members! So, he really focused on referral work, formers, etc... He also talked about linking our recent converts to members in the church better so they are more solid. Also, he told us that as leaders we don't need to hold our missionaries accountable, but help them feel the need to be accountable. So, there are so many awesome things I learned, can't even write them all down.  It was a great time in BKK and I learned so much! After the meetings we headed back to Chiang Mai. Got into town Sunday morning at like 5 am. So we got a little bit of sleep, got ready and then went to an amazing day of church. We definitely crashed last night once we got home, though. And we may just crash today, too! haha

So, it's been a great week! We have a lot of potentials, and a lot of great investigators! We are being blessed so much and are so grateful to be serving together here in Chiang Mai!

I love you all so so so much! I hope you have an amazing week!

Love,

Sister Stevenson

Basking in the Light

สวัสดีคะครอบครัวที่รัก! :)

The ward in Chiang Mai is amazing! It's actually still a branch because it's not a stake up here yet. But, in Chiang Mai there are two branches. The first meets at 9:00 am and the second meets at 1:00. We are over the second branch with the zone leaders. It's fun having 1:00 church. I really, really like it. It makes it easier to get people to church in the first place, and it gives us time to invite and to make lots of church calls. The branch president is so great. He is so willing to serve and help everybody and he just has this kind, calming presence. I feel like everything just runs smoothly here and there's a lot of love and kindness here. I LOVE it here! And there are definitely a lot of tourists! We have a couple falang families that are here with the military and school. They are cute! In fact for FHE tonight we are going to the Darting's for Hawaiian Haystacks and cheesecake! Wahoo!

Yesterday at church a falang couple in their 60's or so came because they have a fly-fishing company here in ChiangMai and in Burma. They're based out of Logan. Fun to talk with them!

I've been hearing about the Open House in Bangkapi from the members on fb and I wish I was there for it! Sounds like it was quite a big deal!

So, this was such a great, amazing, crazy week! I don't even know where to start, so much happened. I guess I'll start with Tuesday: Training from Pres. Senior and switch-off's with the Chiang Rai sisters! Awesome, awesome day! So, President and Sister Senior have been traveling around the country visiting districts to give more one-on-one training!  It was so wonderful. There were so many awesome things that I learned, but I think the take-away message I got from it was that we need to be showing more love to the people we teach. As a mission we have become very good at teaching people for baptism, but maybe we need to be focusing more on teaching people for conversion. Pres. and Sis. Senior really stressed that we need to be showing our love and charity for our investigators by asking "inspired questions" and identifying their real concerns. In this mission we tend to baptize people really fast and that's totally fine. Pres. Senior talked about how we don't need to slow down the time it takes to prepare people for baptism, but we do need to maybe take an extra ten minutes in a lesson, or give them a random call, etc... to just listen and understand them. Help them know we love and care for them and  are willing to do whatever we can to help them along their conversion process. It was so wonderful!

We did a few role plays and then went and grabbed lunch together. Afterwards, we switched off with Sister Barber and Holmes. We stayed here in Chiang Mai for it. I spent the day with Sister Barber- she is just the best! Loved working with her! She's a great teacher and I learned a lot. Right after the training we had an appointment with one of our recent converts, Brother Dtong. This guy is so awesome. He and his family moved to Germany about 4 or so years ago. His family wanted him to return to Thailand to be a monk so he came, but with no intention of going to the wat. He came to the church one day looking for work and he met with the missionaries and ended up getting baptized. Anyway, President Senior asked to come help us teach in the lesson. I was a little nervous, but it was such a great experience and a confidence boost! I really tried to apply what we'd just learned from the training. haha Pres. Senior had some great insights and scriptures and Brother Dtong had awesome questions! A really great experience! So those were some of the highlights from Tuesday and switch-offs.

So, we had quite a few investigators this week: First off was Th. from Cameroon! I ran into him while we were inviting at a mall and he agreed to meet with us. He originally was playing soccer for Buri Ram, but had an injury and now he buys clothes/shoes/accessories from Thailand and sells them back to Cameroon. Anyway, he said he is not satisfied with his religion and wants to learn more about our church. He is reading the Book of Mormon in French online!

This week we were able to meet with S. a couple of times! Sis. Tilley contacted into him a week or so before she headed home. He then moved to Bangkok, but then last week we just barely found out that he'd changed his mind and is back in Chiang Mai! He understands what we teach very well and willingly keeps all the commandments! He has a goal to be baptized in September. He couldn't come to church yesterday because of work, but he's working on getting that squared away! So, we have a lot of hope for S. and are so excited and grateful to be working with him!

Another wonderful investigator is Dt. We invited into him a couple weeks ago. He has met with us a couple of times and really likes what we teach. He came to church last week, but did not come yesterday. Hopefully we'll meet with him soon.

Also, we have another investigator named F. She wants to get baptized, but was a little hesitant about it. We were trying to figure out what the problem was and it finally came down to the fact that she was afraid of getting dropped in the water! So, we assured her she'd be fine and now she's way excited to be baptized.

We had quite a few new investigators come to church on Sunday for the first time, but I'll write more about them next week once we have the chance to meet them and teach them more! I really feel like we are being so blessed right now! Exciting time! So grateful!

This week we also had a lot of awesome opportunities just to spread a little light to people. We met with a lot of travelers and foreigners that were very interested in our work. We met with some Chinese tourists, a German couple, and a man from Canada. We had really nice conversations with them all and were able to introduce them to the church and our beliefs. After talking to all these people Sis. Bentley and I just felt so happy! These people are now at least a little closer to Christ and have the information to contact the church in their home countries.

Anyway, we had two Chinese tourists come to the church one morning while we were there. One was a man in his 50's named Zh. and his niece in her 30's or so named L. One of the elders had invited them and they randomly showed up at the church. We were the only ones there so we gave them a tour of the church. It was the neatest thing. When we walked into the Sacrament room both of them just gasped and then paused. They really felt the Spirit, but of course they did not understand it. Zh. asked if he could take a picture so that he could remember how he felt here. They were so receptive and excited to learn. Zh. even told us that if we come to China he will let us stay at his house and cook us food. They are so cute! Anyway, L. came to church on Sunday. Zh. was not able to come. The elders are taking care of them. They'll be here for a month, so they'll be coming on Sundays and meeting with the elders during the week! So amazing! Really spiritual experience!

Okay, lastly, our very exciting news: Sister Bee was baptized! This girl is just so amazing! She had met with elders in the past on the street but was not interested in the message. However when a Christian lady came to the university and prayed with her class she said she felt something different and began researching God online. Well, she remembered the elders and decided to come to our church a few weeks ago. She accepted everything so willingly and happily. One day we met up for a lesson and she had been fasting all day long. Another time we were explaining the baptismal covenant and the Gift of the Holy Ghost and she literally clenched her fists and started shaking because she was so excited! On the day of her baptism she was just beaming! She told us that before she was baptized she never gave much thought to life, but now she has direction and understands her purpose and she feels more like an adult. Sister Bee is so amazing. I love her so much! She was truly prepared to receive the gospel. She's also made a ton of friends. One thing that I just love about Thai people is that they welcome everyone in so happily and quickly. People that enter the church here feel like their part of the family from day one and they all become very close. It's so amazing! I LOVE THAILANDDDDD!!!!

So, this was an awesome week! This email doesn't even cover it all, but I need to get started on pictures.

Oh big news!!! I found a REAL brownie... a real, chocolatey, sweet, dense, chewy brownie. With nuts!! In heaven! I think this may be my first real brownie since I left the MTC.

I love you all so much! Have an amazing first week of school and have safe travels and run fast!

Love,

Sister Stevenson

Changes and Changs (elephants)

Hello family and friends!

This was a really great week. Lots of travel, it's all kind of a blur. Basically, we headed down to Bangkok on Wednesday night and got there around 6:00am on Thursday morning to drop off Sister Tilley. Sad to say good bye to her, she's one awesome missionary and I am so happy we got to spend a couple of weeks together! Anyway, we had to run a few errands in BKK to get her ready to leave, so that took up most of Thursday. However, I became the new Sister Training Leader, so we had to stay for Friday as well to go to Missionary Leadership Council. We stayed the night at the Asoke Sisters' house and it was soooo much fun! There are the DinDaeng Sisters (Sister Jackson and Sister Pitts) and the International sisters (Sister Ing and Sister Peterson!). It was SO awesome to catch up with Sister Peterson. I have really missed her. Also, in the middle of the night Sister DuPlessis and Sister Eve  showed up. So fun to see them! Miss them all. Sister Hughes and Sister Speas are now STL's in Udon and we all went out to Sizzlers and Coldstone together! It was a really fun reunion.

Anyway, Friday morning we had MLC and the Meekers prepared a delicious pancake breakfast for us all. They are the sweetest! So full of energy and always serving others. Normally MLC happens at the beginning of every month, but there was a special meeting this week in preparation for the visit of Elder Allen, who is over the mission department. He's coming in two weeks, which is when we'll go to BKK again for another MLC. This time we received training from President and he talked about how we can unite the mission a little better and remember to have balance in all we do.
President also discussed other reminders to pass along to the zones. So, it was a really great meeting to prepare us all for when E. Allen comes. He's coming to MLC, and will go out teaching and inviting with some missionaries in Bangkok. I'm excited to see what we learn from him!
It was a really fun, and really tiring three days of travel and no sleep! haha Today is going to be a relaxing P-day! But I just loved meeting with Elders and Sisters from around the mission. Such a boost!

Back in Chiang Mai we have been really, really blessed! We weren't here for a good chunk of the week, but God blessed us for it!

We have one investigator that is on mark to be baptized this coming Sunday. She is about 20, studying at the university. She has a pretty awesome story. So, a long time ago she ran into some missionaries and she was not at all interested. However, she kept the pass-along card that they gave her. A few weeks ago she was at school and a Christian lady came and prayed with them in one of her classes. She said she felt different and she felt good and she wanted to learn more about what she felt. So, she remembered the elders that she had once met, and decided to come to church. So, last Sunday she came for the first time and we got to teach her multiple times this week. She is so prepared and so sincere in learning. She has so many awesome questions and she is so willing to keep the commandments. One of my favorite moments was when we were watching the Restoration video and at the First Vision she gasped and told us she had goose bumps! She's so solid and she loves being at the church. She's made a lot of friends and is so willing to meet with us. We'll be teaching her tonight. I love this girl and am so grateful for the elders that gave her that pass-along card so long ago and that she acted on her feelings to come to church. What a miracle!

Also, we had 5 investigators that came to church on Sunday! All of them have the goal to be baptized, but there's going to be a lot of logistical things to work out. So, we're praying and working for miracles. We just feel extra blessed and excited!

Oh, this was really fun: So, last week we were talking with the zone leaders about how we can give a little boost to the zone. Elder Omer had a great idea of coming up with a motivational video to the Alex Boye rendition of "Have I Done Any Good?" So, we took videos of our companionships working and Sister Bentley compiled them into a movie for the zone. It turned out way cute!  Anyway, that was super fun, and I was blown away at how fast Sis. Bentley whipped out that video. She's never made videos before and it’s done so well. Skill.

Anyway, those are the highlights of the week. It's all kind of a blur, but it was such a good week. I love Sister Bentley so much. She is such an amazing missionary and we have so much fun together. I'm learning a lot from her. I love Chiang Mai. I love the members. I love this Gospel and I LOVE sharing it!

I hope you all have a wonderful, amazing week!

Love,

Sister Stevenson
